BREWSTER (Stony Brook Field)- After the bats came alive for the Whitecaps last night against Chatham, starting pitcher Aaron Meade (Missouri St.) and the Harwich Mariners shut out Brewster with the 1-0 victory.

The pitching on both sides was impressive. Mariners’ starter Aaron Meade worked 7 innings, surrendering four hits and striking out a total of twelve Whitecaps.  Brewster starter Matt Lujan (San Francisco) got through 7 innings as well, letting up three hits and three walks. The only run Lujan let up was in the fifth inning, which proved to be enough for Harwich to get the win.

A leadoff four-pitch walk to David Herbeck (James Madison) was how the fifth started for Harwich. Herbeck would move to second on a Joe Loftus (Vanderbilt) sacrifice, and then to third on a passed ball. Mariners’ catcher Anthony Sosnoskie (Virginia Tech) came up and slapped a Lujan pitch into right field to bring home the first and only run of the game.

Brewster did have a few chances to get some runs throughout the game.

In the 4th inning with one out, Mark Canha (Cal Berkley) and Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia) hit back to back singles. Aaron Meade buckled down, striking out Tim Ferguson (Ole Miss) with a breaking ball in the dirt and painting the outside corner to catch Lyle Allen (Georgia) looking.

In their last chance to make a move, Brewster got runners on in the 9th. Mariner Glenn Troyanowski (Florida Atlantic) came in with a chance to save the game. Mark Canha reached first to lead off the inning by getting nicked in the arm by a fastball. With a big bat coming to the plate in Jedd Gyorko, Whitecaps coach Tom Myers elected to let him swing away instead of putting on the sacrifice. Gyorko got under a fastball and popped it up right above home plate. The ball stayed in play for the Harwich backstop to make the grab in front of the press box. Tim Ferguson came up and jumped on the first pitch he saw, hitting a hard grounder that got through the left side, moving Canha up a base. The next two batters struck out, missing out on Brewster's final opportunity to put some runs on the board.

GAME NOTES:

The Brewster defense looked spectacular during the game, most notably the infield. Shortstop Niko Gallego (UCLA) showed off his smooth glove work, making a few nice plays on balls hit to both sides. A true shortstop, Jedd Gyorko is just getting used to the hot corner, playing third base for the second straight game as a Whitecap. He made a great barehanded play coming in on a ball in the 8th, throwing out the runner just in time.  Two double plays were also turned in the 5th and 6th innings, 6-4-3 and 4-6-3 respectively.

David Goforth (Ole Miss) looked good in relief, keeping Brewster in the game in the latter innings. He let up one hit and struck out two, walking none.
